Tiger Bay Club kicks off 2021 Programming with a Forecast of Florida’s Economy – February 5
Dane Eagle, Executive Director of the FL Dept. of Economic Opportunity, Headlines Program
2021 is here and there’s a new Sheriff in town. With a new Biden administration, we’ve already seen numerous new executive orders executed, continued focus on economic growth, and a shift in policy priorities. The latest economic reports show Gross Domestic Product, the broadest measure of goods and services produced across the economy, grew by 4% on an annualized basis in the three-month period from October through December. However, the economy remains 2.46% smaller at the end of 2020 than at the end of 2019. Measuring 2020 output overall against the previous year, GDP fell 3.5% in 2020. The pandemic still continues to command much of our economic focus.
With so much uncertainty, from how the stock markets will continue to respond, to how the proposed new stimulus bill will impact local government, small businesses and US citizens, and the continued roll out of COVID-19 vaccinations, economists remain split on how the fallout from the pandemic will impact our recovery for years to come.
But here in Florida, efforts to assist communities in developing plans to enhance resiliency remain at the forefront of our DEO. Dane Eagle, Executive Director of the Florida Department of Economic Opportunity, will join Tiger Bay on Feb. 5 at Broadway Palm to discuss the Governor’s plans to rebuild Florida’s economy, continued plans for Reemployment Assistance and business growth.
Just recently, Governor Ron DeSantis proposed a $96.6 billion state budget for the next fiscal year that avoids laying off scores of employees or dipping into state reserves.
His proposed budget is $4.3 billion higher than the budget lawmakers passed last year, a surprising increase despite historic job losses and business closures from the coronavirus pandemic. DeSantis said that better-than-expected state tax revenue and billions in federal pandemic money allowed the state to avoid massive agency cuts.
Don’t miss out on this opportunity to hear firsthand from Executive Director Dane Eagle and the DEO’s efforts to invest in Florida’s communities while also advancing important workforce development initiatives.
